Ferguson Defends Reading Gesture

The Red Devils' boss was caught on camera gesticulating towards the home team's bench after Cristiano Ronaldo's goal gave the visitors a two-lead at the Madejski Stadium.

While the Football Association may launch an enquiry, Ferguson stated that he was not being offensive and was merely celebrating his team's victory.

“All I was doing was expressing my relief at winning what was one of our hardest matches of the season. Reading always make it tough for us," he explained.

“We ran so much that we clocked up more kilometres than we have in any game this season.”

Reading manager Steve Coppell was not concerned as he believes that the gesture was made at coach Wally Downes, who he insisted could hold his own.

“I’ve known (Ferguson) for many years and he hasn’t lost any of his fire and he hasn’t mellowed," he said.

“He intimidates more than enough people and you have to respond to intimidation.

“But any argument with Wally Downes would definitely have been a catchweight contest.

“Alex wasn’t very happy about the amount of time the referee added on.”

Manchester United flew out Saudi Arabia after the game to play in a lucrative testimonial for Sami Al-Jaber, who is retiring.

The Premier League leaders will not return until the early hours of Thursday morning, but Ferguson does not believe it will affect his side ahead of the FA Cup tie against Tottenham on Sunday.

“I do not think the trip will do us any harm," he stated.

“It will be good for the players to get away and play and train in some warm weather. We will be back in plenty of time.”
