Villarreal Propose Major Changes To The Spanish League Villarreal are set to propose a number of changes to the Spanish Football League (LFP) to help

The controversial move may meet with some resistance, but the Yellow Submarine would like to see at least one of the measures implemented.

Teams at the top end of the table and in Europe and the Copa del Rey have been forced to play twice a week since the New Year and are set to continue once the Champions League starts again.

Villarreal director José Manuel Llaneza was pleased that the Christmas break was only one weekend off this year, but he would like to see the stoppage scrapped altogether.

"We do not see how it is convenient for the league to stop and yet, without any problems, players can go off and play with their autonomous teams, most have which have very little interest," he explained.

"It is always the clubs that end up paying too.

"Villarreal is going to propose to the LFP that the clubs are not made to assume the consequences of the problems that can come from players' participation in these games.

"They benefit others and only hurt the clubs."

If that is not a popular idea, then Llaneza will also put the forward the suggestion that the size of the Spanish top flight is reduced or the season starts earlier in August.

"Although it may end up affecting Villarreal, it would be logical that the first division is reduced to 18 clubs," he continued.

"That would shorten the season by four games and would help teams that have good runs in the cup competitions."

"An earlier start wouold also be good as a player can have 30 or 40 days holiday, like everyone else, but then he cannot spend another 40 or 50 days in pre-season training because he needs to compete."
