This season has been particularly tough for the 25-year-old, who has even had to endure booing and jeering from his home supporters during games at San Siro.
Last week teenage wonderkid Alexandre Pato dazzled on his debut alongside Ronaldo and Kaka, and if all three keep themselves fit some believe it is difficult to see where Gilardino will fit in.
“I continue to think that Gilardino has not yet given when he truly can,” said Berlusconi Jr.
Another player who has had a miserable campaign is goalkeeper Nelson Dida. The Brazilian has made a whole host of costly errors, and there have been strong reports that Milan are actively seeking a replacement.
“Dida is going through a difficult time and we hope it will pass. He has given so much to Milan, so it is right he remains the first choice,” Berlusconi added.
“We need to give him a little more time, but if the situation does not change then it’s good to look around and see what the alternatives are.”
