Complications Abound In Frey-Gilardino Trade The Correire dello Sport has given three reasons why any swap switch between Fiorentina and AC Milan for

Reports surfaced yesterday of a possible swap deal between Milan and Fiorentina for Gilardino and Frey, but there are numerous obstacles that must first be scaled before such a move can take place.

The Correire dello Sport points out that, while a future switch could be a reality, it has three major components that complicate it.

Firstly, Gilardino currently earns 3.6 million euros net per season; this sum will rise to 4 million for the 2009-10 campaign. Fiorentina, meanwhile, pay 1.5 million euros to their absolute top earners, and no more.

However, the striker is unhappy at being so far down the pecking order in Milan, and may opt to make a move for the sake of first team football, even if it involves a salary decrease.

Second, Fiorentina's director of sport, Panteleo Corvino, has spoken out - under orders from president Delle Valle - over Fiorentina's transfer policy. The gist of the message was that none of the champion players would be sold. To part with Frey, who is by all accounts quite happy in Florence, would break that promise.

Thus Frey would need to ask to be transfer listed in order ot make a sale politically possible. And while the 'keeper is happy both with the club and the city, he is not pleased that the salary cap at Fiorentina is lower than elsewhere. The financial incentive of a move to Milan could be enough to provoke him into seeking a move.

However, there is a third condition that could soothe the blow of this one. A replacement goalkeeper of similar stature would show that Fiorentina still have the ambition to compete. Marco Amelia of Livorno has been mooted as a possible replacement, albeit one whose club are unwilling to sell.
