New Fulham manager Roy Hodgson is determined to strengthen the Cottagers' squad in the remaining 12 days of the January transfer window, with forwards a priority.
Hodgson could soon be boosted by the return to full fitmess after injury of Jimmy Bullard - a second-half substitute against Arsenal on Saturday - and Brian McBride.
But he knows he needs to bring in some fresh faces before the window closes.
He was previously linked with a move for Harry Kewell of Liverpool in a £2.5million deal but was put off after learning of the Australian's frightening salary, which Fulham would be unwilling or unable to match.
There was also speculation that he could move for Liverpool's Danny Guthrie, 20, who is on loan at Bolton, where manager Gary Megson is also expected to make an offer for the £3millon-rated midfielder.
Hodgson, who is reportedly keen on West Ham striker Bobby Zamora, was also linked with Finnish defender Sami Hyypia at Liverpool, but is likely to be rebuffed in that pursuit.
However, he remains hopeful of adding Watford striker Marlon King to his squad, despite the medical snag that appeared to scupper a deal on Friday.
After the 3-0 home defeat by Arsenal, Hodgson told journalists: "It is an ongoing situation and everyone is still talking about it - the clubs and the agents, the player.
"We just hope that the matter will be resolved in the coming days and we hope it will be.
"I am not aware of anything other than it being an ongoing situation and the clubs discussing the matter."
Hodgson added: "People are realistic. But I have to say I don't think the players have given up and if we bring in some new faces, that will improve the spirit even more.
"As far as I'm concerned, it's a work in progress and we're up for that work. We know where we have to improve."
