It took an impressive long-range drive from Fernando Torres to rescue a point for Liverpool at the Riverside. The draw with Middlesbrough leaves the Reds 12-points adrift of Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premiership table.

Liverpool have drawn four games straight. Bullish midfielder Javier Mascherano was frustrated that his side couldn’t find a winner and insists they cannot drop more points.

"It was fantastic goal by Fernando," the Argentinean told said the club’s official website.

"I was behind him when he took the shot and it was a beautiful goal. It gave us the platform to go on from there. Now we have to start winning for our confidence.

"In the second half we played with more passion and after we equalised we had more chances but could not get the winner.

"Now we have to make sure we keep working hard and think about the next game because we cannot afford to drop more points."

Mascherano wouldn’t have foreseen such a struggle this season, having made the switch to Rafa Benitez’s side from West Ham, who fought out a relegation battle last term.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old will be hoping Mohammed Sissoko's faltering £10million move to Juventus can be pushed through this month, as Liverpool need £17million to secure Mascherano’s services on a permanent basis.
