Alan Smith will miss Newcastle United's next two matches following his red card in the closing seconds at Old Trafford at the weekend.

Smith was dismissed for dissent as frustratio got the better of him against his former club Manchester United, who completed a 6-0 drubbing of his current side, managerless Newcastle.

As a result, he will now miss the Magpies' FA Cup third-round replay against Stoke City on Wednesday and the Barclays Premier League fixture with Bolton Wanderers next weekend.

Another former Manchester United player, midfielder Nicky Butt, is also out of the Magpies' next two fixtures after picking up his 10th caution of the season in the Newcastle's original match against Stoke, which ended 0-0.
