It all began when Drogba made public his desire to play with Samuel Eto'o earlier this week. His relationship with Chelsea has been icy at best since the departure of Jose Mourinho, and rumours the following day suggested that the Blues were themselves open to the idea if Barcelona included Lionel Messi in the deal.
The Catalan press suggested that the club might offer a player, but it would be Ronaldinho and not Messi, something that could still appeal to Roman Abramovich.
Those have all been rumours, though. Here is something concrete.
Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure has revealed that Didier Drogba has been asking him about the club, and is keen on the move.
"Yes, he has admitted to me that wants to come [to Barcelona]," Toure told Catalan radio, elaborating on the discussions he has been having with the striker as they both prepare for the Ivory Coast's African Nations' Cup campaign.
"We have spoken about Barcelona, and it all looks very good. Of course, it will be difficult, because Madrid and Milan are also after him.
"In my opinion, it would be very good if he were to join us, because we have lots of great players and he would be another one of them."
The declarations come less that 24 hours after Nicolas Anelka made a public plea for Drogba to stay on at Stamford Bridge.
