David Beckham left Manchester United for Real Madrid in 2003, but according to Arsene Wenger, the midfielder's spell in Spain may have ended just a year later, had he been successful in his transfer attempt.

The Arsenal boss told the Daily Express, "David almost came to Arsenal a couple of years ago when things did not go too well during his first season with Real.

"I even met the people who took care of his career, but in the end, David decided to remain at Real."

The England ace went on to remain at the Bernabeu until the summer of 2007, when he completed his free transfer to Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.

Beckham is currently training for international fitness with the Gunners during his Galaxy close season.
