Zauri himself has even filled in at central defense amidst the injury crisis at Lazio, and with him missing Lazio will further struggle to recapture some of the form that saw them gain Champions League qualification last season.

This season has seen the Biancocelesti disasterously underachieve, they are 15th in the league with 18 points from as many games, dangerously close to the relegation zone.

As well as that, they were unceramoniously dumped out of Europe, finishing bottom of their Champions League group behind Real Madrid, Olympiakos, and UEFA Cup-bound Werder Bremen.

A silver lining, at least to some degree, came as Lazio knocked Napoli out of the Coppa Italia - had they lost, manager Delio Rossi could have been left without a job.

Their progression came at a price, though, as Zauri fell injured, and though the damage didn't look that serious to begin with, scans after the game revealed the bad news.

The Lazio skipper will join Mobido Diakhite, Stephen Makinwa, Mourad Meghni, Fabio Firmani, Gaby Mudingayi, Massimo Mutarelli and Sebastiano Siviglia in the infirmary.

They are all set to miss this weekend's clash, indeed against their Coppa opponents Napoli, who will be seething for revenge.
