Del Neri believes his side were unlucky not to come away with a point after they fell 2-1 at home to an eager Roma side.
The Bergamo based club took the lead early in the first half thanks to a nice strike by Ferreira Pinto. However their hopes of beating the Giallorossi were dashed when Amantino Mancini and Francesco Totti guided their side to all three points with two stunning goals.
Atalanta slip down to ninth place and sit six points above the relegation Trap door. Their coach believes the referee was slightly generous in dishing out free-kicks.
The Nerazzurri played well and could have equalised in the second half after creating a flurry of chances, however Roma held on, much to the frustration of Del Neri who could not hide his disappointment after the game.
“I can say that this performance bodes well for the future. We did enough to earn a point, I believe.”
“I tried not to protest against the referee, but I don’t think my team was so ‘mean’ as to warrant all those free kicks. It is our ambition this season to avoid relegation.”
Atalanta have played well this season and at one stage they were in the Champions League places. The UEFA cup still seems like a possibility for the side from Lombardia.
