Abbiati: I Am Better Than Amelia Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Christian Abbiati says he doesn’t want to be considered by Italy for Euro 2008 but says h

Madrid Derby

Abbiati is currently on loan at Atletico from AC Milan, and is looking forward to tomorrow’s capital derby with Real Madrid.

"We have to win, because at home we have not beaten them much and we must continue to pursue our objective, qualifying for the Champions League,” the 30-year-old said.

Wish To Stay At Atletico

The custodian has expressed how happy he is living in Spain at the moment.

"I am happy. With my wife and my daughter we are all well, and with more courage we would have chosen to come here a few years ago,” he explained.

"I am still owned by Milan, the final decision lies with them. At the end of the season we shall see, we will evaluate the proposals and decide. Now is still premature.”

Lack Of Young Italian Goalkeepers

Abbiati also hit out at the lack of young Italian goalkeepers coming through in the peninsula.

"In Italy clubs lack the courage necessary to launch and protect a young goalkeeper,” he said, referring to the fact that seven of Serie A’s first-choice goalkeepers are foreign, while another four are between the ages of 39-43.

“Roma have Curci, but they play Doni. Inter bought Viviano, but he left to join Brescia. It is true that we no longer have so many youngsters like before but some should surely play.

Euro 2008 & Amelia

Finally Abbiati closed the door on the possibility of travelling to Euro 2008 as a backup for Gianluigi Buffon, while he also hit out at the ability of Livorno’s Marco Amelia.

"No thanks, I already gave my service,” Abbiati said.

“I was the third goalkeeper for 8 years, that is enough. Now I like to stay at home with my family. The third goalkeeper must be young and talented - Curci is perfect.

“As for the other two positions, the number one [Buffon] is indisputable but I do not agree about the number 12. The coach will have his reasons. Amelia is good off the pitch. He is a very good goalkeeper, but I do not see big differences between me and him. I am better than Amelia.”
