Van Basten In Hamburg Link

With 54 year old Stevens announcing his intention to leave the club in the summer, the hunt is underway for his successor.

Reports in ‘Bild am Sonntag’ claim that Stevens and Sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer travelled to Holland yesterday to open talks with a potential successor and that individual was van Basten.

The former Milan and Holland striker will be leaving his post as Dutch trainer after the European Championship finals and will no doubt be looking for a new challenge.

“After four years, it will be time for a new environment” van Basten told Bild.

“Hamburg is an interesting club, a European club with potential and perspective. Good people work there. But I can’t talk about things that lie in the future” he added.

Van Basten’s name was being mentioned for the Bayern Munich job, before Jürgen Klinsmann got the nod. Like Klinsmann, van Basten has no experience of club management.

Whoever gets the job will be expected to carry on the good work of Huub Stevens, who has rescued the club from relegation and taken them into the Uefa Cup and third place in the Bundesliga.
