Almeria Coach Emery: We Completed Our Objective

Emery was very pleased with his team’s victory, and considered it to be important because the “objective to win the match was completed,” although his team “didn’t play like he would have liked them to.”


After their hard-worked narrow victory over Depor Emery affirmed that they “had to understand the context of the match, and the tension that was reflected onto the pitch.”


When asked about the performance of rivals Deportivo, Emery told the press he wasn’t surprised with their good level, because he had seen them during “lots of matches, where they were able to win, and where they lost when they deserved better, and this time they played with intensity and pressured a lot.”


“They were difficult rivals, and they created more goal scoring opportunities than Almeria, we have to admit this,” he affirmed.


Emery understands that his team were second best during large moments of the match, but he feels that when evaluating the full ninety minutes they were worthy winners.


“We insisted, and in the last thirty minutes we played better, and we didn’t allow Depor to reach our area with any danger.”


After their vital victory Almeria climbed up to tenth position on the ladder, six points away from the UEFA Cup qualification zone.

Mazano Unhappy With Ref And Defence

The Balearic club's boss was frustrated that what he believed to be several fouls went unnoticed by the the referee and pinpointed three ocasions when ÓScar Trejo could have been given something.

"There were a number of times when the referee has not whistled in our favour," Manzano said.

"He has not given two clear fouls on Trejo that would have helped us."

Despite his complaints about the referee, Manzano recognised that his back four should have done better in the closing minutes when Álvaro snatched a late leveller.

"In the last move we should have defended better as we had all the points in the bag," he continued.

"Now we are left with a bad taste in our mouths as a point does not do much good.

"We had plenty of good chances and played well and I thought we did enough to finish things off."

De Biasi Hopeful About Striker Crisis

Alex Geijo scored for the top flight strugglers, but then picked up a knock and had to be replaced by young Vicente Iborra during Los Grantotes 2-2 draw at home to Mallorca.

Levante netted a late equaliser to earn a point and now the coach is already looking forward to having certain players back before next weekend.

"I hope to be able to field a competitive team for the next game," De Biasi said.

"We have to throw in a boy who will be a great player in the future but should not have to burden such pressure at such a young age.

"Geijo's injury is a shame as it happened on the same day that he scored his first goal in the first division.

"But he is a player that has always worked hard and I hope that he can return to action soon."

Despite only picking up a point, De Biasi was pleased with his side's performance and he determined to remain positive despite being 13 points adrift at the bottom of the table.

"I was pleased with the work, the desire and the willingness to win every ball," he added.

"We have worked hard for the first 30 minutes and looked to catch them on the break.

"I continue to think positively as I have done ll my life and that has always helped me to achieve my goals."

Valladolid's Llorente Scores Fastest Ever Liga Goal

Joseba Llorente Etxarri has inscribed his name in the record books after scoring the opener against Espanyol today in 7.42 seconds.

The former Real Sociedad and Eibar forward controlled Victor's fine long-ball forward and, with fans no doubt still settling into their seats or filtering through from the turnstiles, immediately shot past Inaki Lafuente to put his side in front.

In the end, they went on to win 2-1, but Llorente's achievement will be remembered long after the result.

Llorente, 28, has recently hit form after a tough winter, making it nine for the season after his brace today.

His 7.42 second feat bests that of the previous record-holder, Dario Silva, by .58 seconds. The Malaga man struck home against none other than Valladolid eight seconds into their encounter in December 2000.

CA Osasuna 2 - 0 Athletic Club

A late onslaught arrested Osasuna's slide and goal drought in one fell swoop.

There was little for the derby-ready fans to cheer about in the first half, with Javi Martinez's low drive for the visitors being the best chance of the first half.

If anything, the beginning of the second was even duller, with the hope that substitutions might change things around.

That they did, for Osasuna quickly began to press forward.

And it paid off 68 minutes in when Dady made it 1-0, evading the defence to barrel home from range.

Just sixty seconds afterwards, young gun Carlos Vela doubled his side's advantage with a one-on-one effort past Aranzubia; the shot, as powerful as it was accurate, crashed home off the post.

That was enough to leave Athletic stumbling in a daze, and to seal three vital points in what was as much a relegation battle as a Basque-Navarre one.

Real Zaragoza 3 - 1 Real Murcia

Zaragoza registered a Liga win for the first time since October, giving new coach Ander Garitano a winning start (if one excludes the Copa.)

Diogo had a fine chance early on, but Alvaro Mejia almost opened for the visitors in what were rather even preliminary exchanges.

However, Ricardo Oliveira gave the home fans a chance to shout half an hour in when he swept through a directionless visiting defence to get on the end of Sergio Garcia's through ball and fire home.

Zaragoza fans have endured so many false dawns before that they would have greeted the half time interval with caution more than optimism. However, they were given a clear sight of victory on the hour mark when Diego Milito capped off a period of pressure with his side's second.

The prolific Argentine got on the end of a long ball to go face-to-face with Notario, winning the duel with ease.

Milito then struck again late on after an extraordinary team move to well and truly banish the demons of the blanquillos' hellish run, while bringing with it an end to Murcia's decent form of late. Even Ivan Alonso's late solo effort for the visitors would have been of little consolation.

Levante UD 2 - 2 RCD Mallorca

For the second week running, those remaining Levante fans were treated to some late heartbreak on their own patch, only this time they were able to turn the tables on their tormentors.

It had all started so well for them: Alex Geijo made it 1-0 early on with a simple finish after picking up a cross from the left. It had been coming for some time, too, as Mallorca struggled to follow up their recent Copa success in the Liga.

However, they did eventually find their feet, and Dani Guiza appeared on the half hour mark to tap home after a stupendous long pass from Ariel Ibagaza.

Both sides had their chances in the second period, but yet again the hosts began to tire towards the end; thus, Kujovic became the busier of the two 'keepers.

And eventually he was to pick the ball out of the net when Guiza struck his second thirteen minutes from time, Borja Valero's pass into the box proving sufficient for the ex-Getafe man to feast on.

But when Alvaro popped up two minutes from time to seal a point, those home fans could, if not cheer exactly, certainly crack a wry smile.

UD Almeria 1 - 0 Deportivo La Coruna

Depor and Almeria fought out a snooze-worthy 90 minutes before the hosts sealed their second late win in a week thanks to an injury-time goal.

Neither coach found themselves animated much in the first period, watching proceedings from the technical area with the curious detachment of an anthropologist.

Their subjects were giving them relatively little to be excited about, in fairness. Felipe Melo was perhaps the sole true source of inspiration as he attempted to give his side the impetus to break forward, but for the most part this was an even encounter.

The second half sawmmore of the same, but, perhaps mindful of goings-on in Pamplona, Depor began to press forward as their relegation woes deepened. Still, Alemria were still holding the bulk of possession.

It seemed set to end as a goalless draw, only for Ruben Martin Pulido to score from close range three minutes into stoppage time after a good combination between Juanito and Corona.


Real Valladolid 2 - 1 RCD Espanyol

A record-breaking strike from Valladolid set the hosts en route to a win over struggling, aimless Espanyol.

Valladolid were off to a flyer when on-form striker Joseba Llorente got on the end of a long ball from Victor, controlled it deftly, then shot past Lafuente - all virtually straight from kick-off.

That was the fastest goal ever scored in Liga football, clocking in at 7.42 seconds, a full .58 faster than Dario Silva's goal in Malaga vs. Valladolid in 2000.

Llorente managed to cap off a memorable afternoon with his second on the half hour mark, and it was a fully merited one at that. The Basque forward was once again put through masterfully by Victor, and wasted no time in converting from close range.

Espanyol were all at sea, and although they managed to pull one back through a far-post header from Marc Torrejon midway through the second half, Valladolid were the better side.

Indeed, Capdevila and Vivar Dorado each had chances to make it 3-1 before the end, but the three points were already in the bag.

Real Betis 1 - 1 Recreativo de Huelva

The hosts may feel that they should have won this game, but a moment of madness in defence cost them two points.

That said, it was even in the first half. Camunas and Javi Guerrero came close for the visitors, while Capi and Edu really should have netted for the verdiblancos.

Javi Guerrero had arguably the best chance of the game right after the break, but after that, it was almost all Betis.

Thus it was no surprise when Edu got on the end of Caffa's cross from the left to bundle home 57 minutes in.

But almost straight from the restart, Javi Guerrero's bobbling header beat Ricardo, who was perhaps shocked at the lack of marking on the Recre forward.

The Beticos pressed and pressed right at the end, but Recre were able to hold out to take a point back down to Huelva with them.

Laudrup: We Played Like Last Week But Won

The Danish coach admitted that he thought the hosts had let their chance slip away when Ivica Dragutinovic equalised for the visitors in the 89th minute.

Getafe showed that they had the drive and desire not to settle for a point and Cosmin Contra was able to steer home the winner two minutes into injury time.

"Last we played very well in Seville. We have played a complete game here though and I am very pleased," Laudrup said.

"The only thing is that I would like to have finished off the game before.

"In the first we had plenty of clear chances and in the second we had three one-against-one but could still not finish it.

"I think the players were motivated, which is logical after losing our last two home games.

"This time we saw a great Getafe team, but I thought we were also very good last week."

In the closing moments, Getafe had a chance to add to their scoreline as they had a three-against-one situation in attack, but contrived not to take advantage of it.

"The curious thing is that earlier in the day we had all watched Reading play Manchester United," Laudrup continued.

"Manchester United were winning by a single goal in the 90th minute and in a move of three against one they failed.

"If Ronaldo, Rooney and Giggs and fail, then we can too."

'San Ricardo' was the golden boy of the Spanish media in the wake of the Betis-Getafe game, which Geta lost by 3-2. Betis' keeper Ricardo closed the doors and gave his team the victory. Getafe dominated the majority of the game and wasted clear occasions to score.

That's not much consolation for the Azulones, though. With 4 defeats and a victory in the last 5, Geta are just a point clear of the danger zone. Skilful striker Uche (African Cup) and mid Sousa (injured) are out, while important mid Pablo Hernández is doubtful. The regulars who were rested midweek in the cup are back.

Sevilla is the team suffering most from the African Cup, as key playersKanoute and Keita are out, as is squad striker Kone. Kanoute is a particularly huge absence, as everything seems to go through him and Luis Fabiano.

De Sanctis, Enzo Maresca, Luis Fabiano and Ernesto Chevantón didn’t practise normally in the midweek but all expected fit in the squad. Keeper Palop and left back Crespo remain sidelined.

A balanced game is expected. I can’t see a clear winner here, as Getafe are nothing if not unpredictable.

Nihat returned to the side and scored twice last weekend, helping Villarreal to overcome Depor in an amazing game. However, the Yellow Submarine did need extra time to get past Recre in the Copa midweek.

Still, with Nihat back the offence can be promising again, as it was the lack of goals to blame for recent bad results.

Mr. Pellegrini has to deal with four absences, as Matías Fernández, Jon Dhal Tomasson, Josico and Fabricio Fuentes are out, the latter for the rest of the season). Central defender Gonzalo Rodríguez has returned tothe squad after spending 7 months in the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Valencia lost at Atletico last Sunday in what was quite a game. Los ‘che’ dominated the whole match - except the first quarter - and wasted many hard-to-miss opportunities to score. Koeman is still searching for his best formation and tactics and had the opportunity to experiment in the cup midweek, to good effect. Zigic has netted 5 in the last month and has more options to play from now on. In more good news, Fernando Morientes and central Raúl Albiol are back in the squad, with Miguel Brito and long term sidelined Alexis Ruano to be the only players missing.

This is a regional derby, and one that Valencia are, perhaps surprisingly, in good stead for. Joaquin shouldn’t be playing in the peak of the attack and Marchena may not be as good as Albelda, but Valencia is improved and as they shown against Atletico, they can obtain a good result in Madrigal.

It's a near-neighbours derby between Osasuna from Navarra and Athletic de Bilbao from Basque Country. It is the 2nd consecutive derby for Osasuna, following the dreadful home defeat against Racing, who only had to play well for 45 minutes in order to win. That defeat moved Osasuna into the deadzone. Corrales and Delporte are fit but Plasil is in doubt. Pandiani is definitely out, weakening the front line.

Athletic had to play extra time in the midweek before finally obtaining a penalty shot-out qualification against Espanyol in the cup, and this was another huge success following the wel- deserved home win against Sevilla in the liga. Keeper Gorka Iraizoz, however, isinjured and won’t play again this season, while important midfielder Orbaiz is doubtful.

Athletic have just lost once at the Reino de Navarra (fomerly El Sadar), having won and drawn three times since 2000. At this time being they enjoy much better form and obviously much higher morale and could escape Pamplona undefeated.

The 9 games winless run has seen los manos drop to just two points above of the danger zone, and because of the need for a ‘change in the air’, coach Victor Fernandez has been sacked. The new trainer is an ex-player, 38 year-old Ander Garitano, who was previously in charge of the youth team. His debut in the cup resulted in a 4-2 defeat at Racing, and now he must debut in front of an expectant home support. Keeper César and midfielder D'Alessandro are fit, while Aimar and a couple of long term injured teammates remain out.

Murcia are level on points with Zaragoza, making this game important for both teams. They had no luck at the Camp Nou against Barcelona and the final score (4-0) was too harsh. No important, new absenteesfor Mr. Lucas Alcaraz - just central defender Ochoa is out. Brazilian striker Adolfo Rosinei is a new transfer and may play.

‘New coach, certain victory,’ as a saying goes in Spain, and as this didn’t happen last Wednesdday in the cup it should happen now against Murcia. Zaragoza should finally end their poor run, but the odds are not at all generous.

Levante have no stress at all, because relegation is almost certain and only a miracle could save them from playing in segunda the next season. This didn’t prevent them from giving a decent fight against champions Real Madrid, though, in a gmae that they only lost right at the death. Italian striker Riganó has also left the team following the departures of his compatriots Storari and Cirillo, and Brazilian Savio. Maybe this situation is better for Levante because now youngest and surely more motivated players can come in, rather than those who were demotivated due to a lack of payment. Tomassi is suspended.

The news that right winger Jonás Gutiérrez and top goalscorer Güiza are set to leave the team has overshadowed the cup qualification against Real in midweek. In fact it was known that Jonas wanted to leave but now this seems to finally be coming to fruition. Mallorca have to be focused in liga now, as a 6 games winless run has brought them just two points above the relegation limit.

Seeing Mallorca as favourites on the road is a bizarre situation, but perhaos understandable. Levante won’t give up fighting, at least for the time being, but sooner or later the empty seats will make an impact on the team. For now, we skip this game in terms of victor. It could be an over if Levante scores and I believe they will.

Almería-Deportivo (Sunday January 20th, 4:00pm)

Almeria was the team that broke Espanyol’s winning run, and while Espanyol were poor, the southerners still deserved their win. Now they have the opportunity to grab another crucial three points in a game even more important than the one last Sunday. Mane, who is linked with Premier League teams (as is striker Negredo) is suspended, while right back Aitor López Rekarte is doubtful.

The recent defeats moved Deportivo into the penultimate place in the table, 4 points off the safety zone. They are used to playing better on the road, but recently they've started to face problems with the physical condition of some of their players, and their defence remains vulnerable.

Coach Lotina is playing for his job in this game. He has only one change in the squad as Alberto Lopo is back and Pablo Amo suspended. What becomes of feuding goalkeepers Gustavo Munua and Dudu Aouate remains to be seen.

Almeria were too strong for Espanoyl and Sevilla. I don’t think they will be afraid of Depor.

With many changes in the starting XI and some justified complaints against the referee – who didn't give what seemed to be a clear penalty in injury time - Valladolid were eliminated in the cup midweek against Atletico and now can focus on their liga campaign. With 5 wins, 4 draws and just 2 defeats since October 28th, Valladolid lie comfortable in the 9th place, 4 points clear of the danger zone. All the regulars who were rested midweek are back in the squad.

Espanyol were stunned in Andalusia against newcomers Almeria in what was a dire performance. Almeria were much better for the entire game and deserved to win.

Espanyol paid for the loss of their on-form midfielder, Ivan De La Pena, who also missed the midweek cup elimination at the hands of Athletic de Bilbao and is doubtful for this encounter.

Of course this is a no bet game.

Paco Chaparro has wisely left the cup out of Betis’ priorities, because los verdiblancos have to fight till the end to avoid relegation. His side was also lucky to have his goalkeeper Ricardo in excellent form last Sunday when they hosted Getafe. They grabbed the 3-pointer and now face the crucial game against Recre in a decent mood, the Copa loss to Valencia already behind him. David Rivas is out for the rest of the campaign, while Juanito and Xisco are suspended. All the regulars who were rested against Valencia (many of them) returned to the squad for training.

Since November 24th and the defeat at the Camp Nou, Recretivo de Huelva have been undefeated and have their formation to thank. Mr. Munoz used the 4-2-3-1 with skilful and speedy Sinama Pongolle as the lone striker and achieved great results. However, Recre didn’t convince with their last performance. They lost their first game since last Sunday, away toValladolid.

It's a crucial game for the two Andalusian neighbours, who are both just one point above the danger zone. Recent history shows no away win, and I believe that this won’t change now.

Atlético-R. Madrid (Sunday January 20th, 6:00pm)

With the majority of their regular players available, Atletico obtained qualification for the last eight of the Copa in the midweek clash against Valladolid. This followed the liga victory in front of the home fans against Valencia. But in both encounters the success was a hair's breadth from failure, and Atletico should feel lucky achieving those results. Reyes and Jurado are doubtful for this one, while Leo Franco, Seitaridis and Zé Castro are sidelined.

Schuster’s Real is the greatest ever at this stage in the season (since Liga reconstruction), having closed the first round on 47 points, winning 15, losing two and drawing two out of 19 games. However, the cup elimination has denied los merengues' players the chance win a treble reward of 900,000 euros each.

Ahead the city derby, Bernd Schuster is facing several squad problems, as regular central defender Pepe is a serious doubt, Diarra is missing - he's at the Copa África - and Gabriel Heinze, Javier Saviola, Christoph Metzelder, Arjen Robben, Roberto Soldado and Javier Balboa are sidelined. Raul and Casillas were rested midweek and are available.

Real are missing many players, but the team’s main body is available. Their performances are not the best possible, but they are playing with engines merely ticking over. I believe that they will enter the Vicente Calderon determined to win this, and will eventually do so.

Barcelona showed against Recre last weekend and Sevilla in the midweek that they can play well in both attack and defence. When playing at the Camp Nou, there are very few teams in Spain that can compete them. The squad returned to practice on Thursday and there was no Ronaldinho, who is still suffering from his knee injury. On the contrary, Messi was present and may have a few minutes against Racing. Samuel Eto'o and Touré Yaya are at the Copa Africa, while José Edmílson and goalkeeper Albert Jorquera are sidelined. José Manuel Pinto came on loan from Celta to cover Jorquera’s absence.

Racing are playing without three key players: the influential forward and captain Pedro Munitis, co-striker Ebi Smolarek, and first choice keeper Tono. Yet the team is winning, and already coach Marcelino has become an idol in Santander. Racing are in 6th place in the table, 5 points clear of 7th place team Valencia and have qualified for the copa’s quarter finals. Central defender Oriol and left back Luis Fernandez returned in midweek, but this game comes too early for Munitis. Smolarek is doubtful and Ayoze suspended.

Despite the fact that Barca are amazing at their home ground, I will skip this game because Racing is capable of everything. An "over" is tempting, but the odds don't make it worth it. The home win is terrible value.

Vela, 18, is on loan at Osasuna from Arsenal for the season and has impressed in the appearances he has made so far this season. He believes that the players are aware that they are not playing as well as they could be, but he trusts in the ability of the side.

"We are conscious that we are not having a good time, that the equipment is not in a good zone and not where we want to be, but the last thing to lose is the enthusiasm, the desire to play, and I continue totally trusting the team and what we have ahead of us," he told Marca.

With so many teams separated by a small number of points in the bottom half of the table, Vela thinks that a run of victories could move them away from the relegation zone, but concedes that this is harder than it sounds.

"I know that it is difficult to win three successive games as anyone can beat anyone in this league

"Each game is hard and you must play at 100 percent because if not the other team will win. It is necessary to work hard and to believe in ourselves, to think that we can do it and move up the table."

Vela conceded that the constant press speculation surrounding the future of manager José Ángel Ziganda is distracting for the players, but that they try to put it to the back of their minds on match-days.

"You always hear what is being said, but we tried to leave it to the side, to continue as we have before and to give the maximum to remove the need for speculation as soon as we can."

Finally, attention turned to Sunday's fixture with Athletic Bilbao, where Vela is expected to make his first start after returning from injury.

"We a lot of desire for Sunday to arrive. There is much rivalry and it is necessary to win this match. We are in a complicated position and this game is life or death," he concluded.

Laudrup Not Looking For Revenge Getafe boss Michael Laudrup insists that his side are not looking for revenge for last year's Copa del Rey final agai

Getafe lost out to Sevilla in the final of the Copa del Rey last year and some had suggested that this tie would be a perfect opportunity for them to exact revenge, although Laudrup insists that such a word is too strong.

"Tomorrow does not have to be revenge, as that is not in my vocabulary. But we will get our own back for the end of the last year and for everything that happened in the first day in Seville," he told a press conference earlier today.

"When you play at home you want to win. Tomorrow we are facing a great team. Perhaps in the league they are not having the best of times, though they try to improve, but it has a special season in the Champions League. In that sense we can be compared."

Laudrup knows that Sevilla have a lot of players that can hurt his side going forward, but emphasized how important his compatriot Christian Poulson is to their team, describing him as "very important and fundamental for their balance".

He also spoke of the tough task ahead for this team on Saturday, saying that if their opponents play to their full potential then "a draw is not bad" and mentioning some more players who could cause them problems.

"We are going up against a team that has leading scorer in the league (Luis Fabiano) and has the best right hand side in the league with Navas and Alvés."

Finally, talk turned to the Madrid derby coming up on Sunday, where Laudrup somewhat democratically predicted a draw.

"I see the derby as very open. Atletico went through in the Cup and Madrid fell and will what to get back on track. A draw at the end of the game would not surprise me at all.

Cufré Looks For Spanish Move Monaco full-back Leandro Cufré wants a move to Spain, with Valencia and Villarreal said to be considering moves for the

Cufré, 29, signed for Monaco in 2006 but has fallen out with the Principality club and now feels his career will be best served by a move to Spain, thus alerting the attention of a number of Primera Division clubs.

The full-back expects to negotiate a release from his Monaco contract with the next few days and once he does he will be free to negotiate with any teams that are interested.

Local rivals Valencia and Villarreal are said to be leading the chase for his signature, although other parties are interested and there are sure to be plenty of offers on the table for the Argentine international.

Cufré is best known to international observers for being the player who jumped off the bench at the end of the Argentina - Germany match at the 2004 World Cup and attacked Per Mertesacker, landing himself a red-card without ever taking part in the game, alongside a four-match ban from international competition.

He is highly rated in some circles and has played for Argentina at Under-20 level as well as at senior level, so it is certainly an attractive proposition for many La Liga clubs when such a player is available without a transfer fee.

El Derbi Madrileño takes centre stage in La Liga this weekend as the two behemoths from the capital collide for the 142nd time in the league. The two clubs racked up a combined bill of over €200 million in the summer transfer market but all that big spending seems to be paying dividends as the results are showing on the pitch.

Atlético finished the first half of the term in their best league position in a decade, while Madrid themselves are enjoying their best start to a season in the club's rich history.

Eight Year Heartache Los

Los Colchoneros will head into Sunday's big game closest to their fierce city rivals in the standings than they have been in quite some time.

Although there's still a ten-point disparity between the sides, Atlético are only two places behind Los Blancos after last weekend's 1-0 victory over Valencia pushed them back into the top three. The hard fought win, coupled with their progress to the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey midweek, would have restored a sense of self belief in the dressing room.

It is that little extra psychological edge that has been missing in all their previous squads all these years and it’s not hard to see why they have had that knack of failing to live up to expectations come the big game.

The men from the Manzanares have yet to beat their illustrious neighbours in the new millennium, home or away. The last time they won was eight years ago back in October 1999, when they came away from the Bernabéu with a 1-3 victory.

Their head-to-head at the Calderón isn't all that impressive either. In fact, in the last 20 years, only twice have the rojiblancos won the derbi in front of their home fans. The last time that happened, incidentally, was also back in 1999. As if that’s not enough to create doubt in the players’ minds, Atléti also have a rather dreadful record this season against the big guns.

Aside from the opening day loss to their neighbours, they have also gone down to Barcelona, Espanyol and Villarreal, the three other clubs that make up the top five. But as always, the form book tends to be the first to go straight out the window in these tempestuous encounters, as emotion and passion usually preside over everything else.

Staggering Statistics

There were doubts at the start of the campaign as to whether Bernd Schuster has the pedigree to take charge at a mammoth club like Real Madrid and whether he was the right man to whip Los Blancos' dressing room into shape like Fabio Capello had the previous term.

After some wobbly performances early on, his position in the hot seat was questioned again but as the wins and the points started piling up, the critics and the sceptics have simply run out of bones to pick with the German trainer. The football may not be eye-catching at times but the statistics so far certainly are.

Top of the table with 47 points, it is the best tally by a club at the halfway stage in La Liga since the three-points for a win rule was introduced in 1995. Not only that, they also currently have the best home record with a perfect nine wins from nine games; the best away record with 20 points out of a possible 30; and the best goal difference with 41 goals scored and only 14 conceded.

Those figures are not only the best in Spain but the best amongst Europe's major leagues at the midway stage. But enough about the numbers. Schuster's boys will still have to perform on the night if they want to extend their six match winning streak in La Primera. They will have to dig deep and cast aside the disappointing midweek loss and elimination to Mallorca in the Copa de l Rey and refocus on their league conquest.

Thiago Motta has made a successful comeback from a niggling knee ailment and he is expected to line-up in midfield against the reigning champions on Sunday. He will slot in for the injured Jurado who suffered a relapse of a hamstring strain during Thursday's training session and will be sidelined for at least a week.

Defenders Zé Castro and Giorgios Seitaridis and goalkeeper Leo Franco are the three players who are out for the long haul due to various injuries, but ex-Bernabéu hero José Antonio Reyes has shaken off a minor ankle sprain and will be available for selection, although he is unlikely to play a huge role in the match.

Portuguese midfielder Maniche, meanwhile, has left for Serie A giants Internazionale after agreeing on a loan deal until the end of the season.

With Sergio Ramos expected to deputize in the centre of defence, Miguel Torres and Michel Salgado will fight for the rightback slot, although the veteran could be favoured to start in order to give the side a more attacking impetus down the flank.

Back up striker Javier Saviola has joined fellow fringe players Roberto Soldado and Javier Balboa in the sick bay, although the pair has resumed light training on the pitch, as has Arjen Robben. Mahamadou Diarra, meanwhile is away on international duty with Mali in the African Cup of Nations.

The Calderón's new golden boy took less than 60 seconds in the reverse fixture on Matchday 1 to score his very first derbi goal, although he would have gladly traded that off for a win instead. He'll be given a second chance to get a taste of both this Sunday and El Kun is as fired up as any die hard Atléti player and fan ahead of the clash. He'll need to be if he is to beat a certain in-form Los Blancos goalie.

Real Madrid - Ruud van Nistelrooy

Van Gol promptly repaid the club's contract extension with a winning double against Levante last Sunday. After a slow start to the season where he briefly handed goalscoring duties to the likes of Sneijder, Raúl and Robinho, the Dutchman is now firing on all cylinders again having netted five times in his last five league games and when he's got that momentum going, it's pretty hard to put the brakes on him.

PREDICTION

Real Madrid's morale would have taken a knock after their Copa del Rey elimination, but they truly relish going up against sides like Atlético, who come out and play instead of parking the team bus infront of the goal. If Javier Aguirre do decide to fight fire with fire and leave the backline exposed, Schuster will feel confident that his side can emulate three of their best away results so far this term: at Villarreal, Valencia and Barcelona.

Bojan Cautious Over Spain Call-Up Prospects Barcelona youngster Bojan Krkic will not get too carried away over the prospect of a full Spain cap again

17-year-old Bojan Krkic is hopeful, but not altogether confident of making his debut with the Spanish national side this February.

The FC Barcelona forward has been capped at all youth levels up to U-21, and is now on the verge of breaking through to the squad proper.

He told Marca, "I'm going to play football, given any opportunity to do so, and if the day comes that I'm called up for the selección then I will of course be grateful - if not, it's OK."

Marca believes that Bojan is almost certain to make the squad for the upcoming friendly with France in Malaga. Should he do so, and take to the pitch, then at 17 years and six months he will become the youngest Spanish international of all time.

Furthermore, it would end his chances of playing for Serbia, who are interested in having him and for whom Bojan is also eligible due to his father.

Bojan was today at Camp Nou for a kids' presentation entitled "Vull ser futbolista" ("I want to be a footballer" in Catalan), an essay competition run by the European Association of Former Footballers and the Catalan Football Federation.

The player himself read out a paper that he wrote when he was eight years old, when he idolised then-Barcelona forward Patrick Kluivert and dreamed of playing for the blaugrana or Manchester United.

"I thought of United because they're a big club, but I always wanted to play for Barcelona," said Bojan.

Copa Del Rey Preview: Real Valladolid - Atletico Madrid

It will be delicately poised heading into the second leg of this Copa del Rey tie at Estadio Zorilla. Though Valladolid will be pleased with their work a week ago, Atleti will know that all they need to do is grab a score draw to progress to the quarter finals on away goals.


That said, the home side will be confident they can beat their opponents from Madrid, who will know doubt have one eye on el derbi at the weekend against Real.


Squad rotation could prove decisive as both coaches will attempt to maintain a balanced side, but also keep their key players rested to avoid injuries or squad fatigue.


Finding Form


Valladolid have looked a good side on their day since gaining promotion last season, but too often they have failed to take advantage of arguably easier fixtures, whilst grabbing valuable points against the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.


With winter, though, has come consistency. La Pucela have held the likes of Sevilla and Atletico Madrid to valuable draws away from home, the latter, of course, being the first leg of this tie just a week ago. They have also been picking up comprehensive wins against teams such as Getafe and Recreativo.


They have looked powerful in the Copa; after a 1-1 tie in the first leg, they traveled to Murcia to bury their opponents with a spirited 3-2 win. In the first leg of this round, they battled admirably to keep an on-form Atleti at bay and came away with a valuable draw.


They may look at the Copa as an outside chance at silverware, but it is more than likely that manager Jose Luis Mendilibar will look to play it safe and keep the league as his first priority.


As a result, we may see a slightly weakened Valladolid line up, but with the tie being at home, Mendilibar may smell an upset and attempt to go for the kill.


Coming of Age


When speaking of form sides, it is hard to avoid Atletico Madrid. Javier Aguirre’s side are finally asserting their authority as a dominant force in the league, getting ever closer to that elusive Champions League qualification spot.


As one of the most successful clubs in Spanish history, they have endured a lull as of late, but the likes of Sergio Aguero, Maxi Rodriguez and new signing Diego Forlan are leading from the front in the post-Torres era, and they are looking stronger than they ever did with the Liverpool star in their squad.


Questions had been asked of their defence: despite winning, they were conceding far too many goals. In recent weeks, however, los rojiblancos have strengthened their resolve at the back, having conceded just three in their last six.


Their sole slip up in recent times came just before the Christmas break when they were beaten at home by an incredible Espanyol side, who have been in exceptional form themselves.


With the club pushing for Champions League qualification as a priority, it is unlikely their UEFA Cup run will be given first priority, as a result their only shot at silverware may indeed come via the Copa, and as Sevilla did last season, Atleti may seek to upset the odds and win the competition that Barcelona and Real Madrid are partially neglecting.

It is possible Kome will start instead of forward Victor in an attempt to take a more solid formation into the game and not get outnumbered in midfield by Atleti.

The tall and strong number 9 has been incredibly prolific since joining the club in 2005 and is always their main threat at the business end of the pitch. Should Sisi, start he may also prove a significant threat down the wings.


Atletico Madrid – Jose Antonio Reyes


It is hard to identify how Atletico will approach this game being away from home and prospectively resting so many players. However, one man with a point to prove who will almost certainly start is ex-Arsenal and Real Madrid man Jose Antonio Reyes.


His ability is plain to see, but he has never been able to hold down a regular place at any club, even after winning Real the league on the final day of last season. His move across town to Atleti has been far from ideal as Simao and Maxi Rodriguez have limited him to mostly substitute appearances.


Reyes will no doubt look to dominate the game in both a creative and dynamic capacity and, as he has such ability to score and assist, as well as prove lethal when taking set-pieces, he will definitely by one to watch on Wednesday evening.


PREDICTION


This game is well and truly unpredictable. A lot will depend on the last minute decisions with squad selection, as well as the mentality on the night – who wants it more? Home advantage will assist la Pucela but ultimately Atletico, who only need a score draw to progress on away goals, will most likely get just that.

Manzano: We Will Play Against Real Madrid And The Referee

The Balearic Islanders' boss hit out at the treatment of small clubs when they play against the Spanish league's powerhouses.

Mallorca travel to Madrid protecting a one-goal advantage from the first leg and Manzano is wary of the referee giving the visitors any big decisions in their favour.

"Referees have lost us three or four points in the first half of the season. We have played eight games when we have had players sent off," he fumed.

"In Madrid we are going to play against Real Madrid and the referee as an added opponent.

"In the history of Mallorca, we have never had one major decision go our way.

"It would bother me a lot if Mallorca do not qualify because the referee had made a mistake on three or four big calls.

"The whole of Spanish football should be equal and the small clubs should not be punished at the expense of the big ones.

After winning the first leg, Manzano was pleased but wanted to play down the sense of euphoria as he knows that it will be very tough to defend the slim advantage.

"Winning the cup is always difficult, but I have already said that we are going to give everything we have," he said.

"I do not want to set up a false belief though so that the everyone will go mad if we do not beat Real Madrid.

"We are limited when we have injuries because are Mallorca. To move up we have to have more money and for that we need to do well in the cup and play in Europe.

"If that does not happen then the coach takes the blame, like what has happened at Zaragoza."

Although all eyes will be on the cup encounter, Manzano believes that the league game against Levante will be more pressing as he looks to push his side back into the top ten.

"I have already said that we will not be playing a defensive formation because that will achieve nothing," he added.

"The most important game for us this week is against Levante, but I repeat; we are going to give everything we have against Real Madrid."

The scoreline is level after the first game and now the playing field has been levelled even further as both sides will be without their African Cup of Nations stars.

Sevilla were unable to field Frédéric Kanouté, Arouna Koné or Seydou Keita in the opening leg last week, but Cameroon gave special permission for Samuel Eto'o to stay at Barça a week longer.

Now the Blaugrana have seen their free-scoring striker jet off to join up with his international teammates and he will be unavailable on Tuesday evening.

Touré Yaya did not play in the opening fixture as he had already teamed up with the Ivory Coast squad, but Sevilla were slightly unhappy that Eto'o had been allowed to stay.

Despite that, the Andalucian outfit put in a strong performance and can consider themselves to be slightly unfortunate to be heading to Camp Nou level pegging.

Back In The Groove

There was little that they could do to stop Thierry Henry scoring six days ago, however, as the Frenchman showed that he could finally be showing his best form again.

At the weekend the former Arsenal player built on his effort in midweek by setting up two of Barça's four goals in the hefty win over Real Murcia.

It was not such good news for Manolo Jiménez's side as they were beaten by the up-and-under tactics of Athletic Bilbao in San Mames.

That result will not have dented confidence at Sevilla too badly and their coach has already begun to discuss how he is going to approach the trip to the Catalan capital.

After seeing another display of sublime attacking football by Barça on Saturday, Jiménez is preparing to shore up his defence and snatch a goal on the break.

Great Expectations

Sevilla go into the game knowing that they have to score at least once to have any chance of going through to the quarter finals of the competition that they won last season.

Barcelona's home record will not make for enjoyable reading for Jiménez as Frank Rijkaard side have let in just five goals in the league this term and netted 26.

Their only defeat came at the hands of arch rivals Real Madrid just before Christmas and they will be out to ensure that another does not follow so soon after.

Sevilla are still trying to make up ground in la Primera after a shaky start to the campaign and it has been on the road that they have really struggled.

With just one win away from home and six defeat from nine games, they will have to turn things around very quickly if they are to knock the Blaugrana out.

Spanish Debate: Should Sissoko Be Atletico's Priority? Atletico Madrid are said to be making a move for Momo Sissoko of Liverpool. Is he the right pl

Juventus have essentially pulled out of the race for Momo Sissoko, but their place on the trail for the Liverpool misfit has been taken by another club: Atletico Madrid.

The rojiblancos are said to be in talks with the Reds over signing the young defensive midfielder, who would add some solidity to the Vicente Calderon central line.

At least, that's the idea. Atleti generally play two in the middle, and with Maniche gone, one of the regular spots has opened up. With young Raul Garcia getting orward at most opportunities, the door is open for a new, defensively-minded player to take the remaining place.

The signing of Sissoko, then, could make sense from the point of view of the first eleven. And he's a decent player with experience of Spanish football. But is it really what Atletico need?

Let's look at the priorities. Up front, Atleti lack depth. Kun Aguero - who is beginning to show his true potential this season - and Diego Forlan have begun to link up amazingly quickly, but striking talent at the Manzanares pretty much begins and ends with these two. Mista's already starting to look somewhat outclassed, and after him there is no more striking cover. The irrepressible Maxi and even Jurado can deputise, but are better elsewhere. As such, maybe signing a new forward would be a prudent move.

But it's at the back where the real issues are: the left-back and centre-back positions in particular. Even the first-choice back line has been ropey at times this season, and when injuries strike, problems arise. Early in the campaign Atleti were leaking goals with alarming frequency; now, things have settled down, but partially because the midfield is playing a more reserved role. That's cut the goals conceded ratio significantly, but at the cost of some creativty: now, Atleti have conceded 19 times in as many games - a decent total - but fallen to 35 scored, way behind Barcelona and Madrid. A new, solid defender could give the midfield the security that they need to start creating two, three, even four goals a game once more.

Or perhaps a true defensive midfielder could see the free-scoring days of old return. Maybe Sissoko could in fact shore up the defence in a 4-1-3-2, allowing for some true attacking play. Right now, there aren't too many options to that effect. It's not just Raul Garcia who likes to get forward, but other centarl options such as Cleber Santana and, especially, Jurado. In that sense it works, as he would be all but guaranteed to hang back.

But as we know, the midfield is already burgeoning, and one name here is key: Thiago Motta. He is a defensive influence - an oft-injured one, admittedly, but a defensive midfielder nonetheless. Drafted in on a budget signing from Barcelona in summer, the Brazilian was clearly looking for first team football. Knocks and fitness concerns have denied him the chance to do so thus far, but with Maniche out of the picture, now seemed to be his chance. Should Sissoko come in, then the former blaugrana man may begin to wonder exactly why he was signed in the first place.

That's the crux of it: a crowded midfield. This affects the wings and the central pairing, and to a much lesser extent the right-back slot. Elsewhere - particularly in the rest of defence and up front, there is a paucity of talent to act as cover. Compare and contrast to the midfield, with all of its big names - sometimes the Atleti subs' bench contains three or four players who would walk into the vast bulk of Liga lineups, and Sissoko would perhaps exacerbate that issue.

To be fair, coach Aguirre has done a great job of keeping his players happy. Maniche-gate aside, things have gone well. The odd rant from the fiery Jose Antonio Reyes aside, those benched midfielders seem to be happy to fight for their places - Luis Garcia, Maxi and even Simao have all had spells as substitutes, without too much ill effect. And surely it's better to have too much cover than too little, as was the case last season.

But Sissoko could still prove problematic due to no fault of his own. Aguirre and the club hierarchy have said repeatedly that they're in no major hurry to land a new signing in January, yet they now seem to be on the trail of a new player - and a midfielder. Whether this dents the confidence or happiness of Motta remains to be seen, but one would think that Aguirre will know his squad well enough to judge what's correct. Even if he doesn't sign the contracts, he has significant input at the Vicente Calderon. He must use it wisely.

Valverde Curses "Worst Match Of The Season" After 1-0 Almeria Loss After Espanyol deservedly lost out 1-0 at Almeria, visiting coach Ernesto Valverde

Ernesto Valverde wouldn't mince words after his side succumbed to a late goal at the Mediterraneo.

"That was our worst game of the championship so far," he spat.

He went on to add that his side's trademark attacking teamplay was nowhere to be found, with only solo efforts giving the home defence anything to worry about.

Real Betis 3 - 2 Getafe

Struggling Getafe fell foul of a rejuvenated Betis side at the Ruiz de Lopera.

Mariano Pavone silenced his doubters yet again just three minutes in with a header from Xisco's free kick, which in turn was borne of a strange foul by Pato Abbondanzieri.

Xisco himself came close soon afterwards, but Getafe had one of the best chances of the half themselves when Granero tested Ricardo at the far post.

The ever-impressive Granero then hit the post on the half hour mark, but Edu had the ball in the net next with a neat finish after Pavone's cutback.

Geta almost netted after a goalmouth scramble, and then had two gilt-edged chances as the second half began, only to squander them both.

Pavone made them pay with his second on the hour mark, but Ruben de la Red threw Geta a lifeline seconds later after Somoza was somewhat harshly have said to have handballed in the box.

It was well and truly game on when Manu del Moral took the ball round Melli to score on the counter thirteen minutes from time, but the hosts had done enough to pull level with the Azulones and escape the relegation mire.

Real Valladolid 3 - 1 Recreativo Huelva

Real Valladolid finally found their shooting boots against lower-table opposition to deserved pick up three points.

They started early. Capdevila and Victor gave Llorente the chance to score his first since December 2, and the striker duly took it as Sorrentino stretched helplessly at the goalbound ball.

And with their second chance of the game, they made it 2-0. Llorente strolled past a sleeping defence after getting on the end of a long ball, with Sorrentino left exposed for a one-on-one yet again. Caceres was particularly at fault, but the Valladolid striker was delighted nonetheless.

The Pucela were firmly in control, but Sergio Asenjo was wrong-footed by Camuñas just before the interval, and the teams went in at 2-1.

Still, it wasn't to last as Llorente grabbed his eighth of the season just before the end. It was a wonderful goal from the Basque man; rounding two defenders, he then left the goalkeeper for dead before racing off, delighted with his day's work.

Almeria 1 - 0 Espanyol

Almeria left it late, but picked up a deserved win against a dazed Espanyol side that is capable of much better.

Within three minutes Luis Garcia had enjoyed a half-chance, but Almeria were to be the better side early on. Felipe Melo's wonderful cross on the quarter-hour mark found Crusat a grateful beneficiary, for example, but the winger shot over the bar.

Espanyol looked severely out of sorts going forward, but the defence was reasonably solid despite the frailties in midfield. In any case, they kept the scores level going into the half time interval, with Negredo's strike midway through the first half being correctly ruled out for handball.

Straight after the break, Crusat was gifted a chance after a massive error from Lacruz, with Lafuente being called into action to deflect the ball wide: little had changed during the respite, it seemed.

And thus it proved when Kala Uche fired home at the far post after a free kick with just two minutes left to play.

Villarreal 4 - 3 Deportivo

Deportivo arguably deserved more from this thrilling contest at the Madrigal, which contained three penalties and a red card.

But in any case, a brace from Nihat and penalties from Rossi and Tomasson were enough to overcome Depor, who had twice taken the lead.

Sergio gave the visitors their first from the spot, before Pablo Amo added one midway through the second period before being sent off. Guardado's last-minute strike, it transpired, was a mere consolation goal.

Real Zaragoza 2 - 2 Real Mallorca

Zaragoza might feel that they should have won this game, but in the end they can be thankful for not throwing it all away at the end.

The home fans must have thought that they were in for a usual afternoon of frustration when Varela received a sensational long ball from Jonas before capping off the move with a sublime finish.

Minutes later, though, Diego Milito threw his side a lifeline as he took advantage of some dreadful decision-making from German Lux to rise and head home a Sergio Garcia cross.

Lux redeemed himself soon afterwards by saving one-handed a curling Milito effort, but he couldn't hold out forever. The Argentine managed his 11th Liga goal just before the interval after Diogo's cross.

Zaragoza continued to keep the pressure up - and Lux kept his saves going - only for Dani Guiza to equalise against the run of play after being put through by Ibagaza.

And despite all of the blanquillos' good pressure, they had Oscar Trejo to thank for ending the afternoon with a point when the young Argentine - who was otherwise impressive - missed a sitter eight minutes from time.

Osasuna 0 - 2 Racing Santander

Racing kept their European dream alive and consigned the Pamplonans to the dropzone after an efficient, second half win in Navarre.

The first half was largely in favour of the home side, with Tono having to pull off a great save to thwart Margairaz just before the interval, and Juanfran twice coming close earlier on.

But Racing started the second period with all due intent, Jordi hitting the bar with a thirty-yarder just after the restart, and Tchite miscuing a one-on-two soon afterwards.

The game became bogged down with fouls and midfield play, with only a very tenuous penalty claim for Osasuna keeping things lively.

But then Racing gave the hosts a lesson in taking chances when Colsa exchanged passes with Jorge Lopez before bundling past Ricardo.

Just a minute later, Pablo Alvarez settled matters when Tchite was able to beat Cruchaga to a poor clearance and tee the midfielder up for the winner.
