The 39-year-old, who made his Rossoneri debut all the way back in 1985 and will retire from football at the end of the season, could have had his pick of any of the great English or Spanish sides, but the comfort of home held too strong a grip on him.
"I never felt the need because I've always had the good fortune to play in my home town where my father was crowned Champion of Europe. If I really had to change, then I would've gone to Spain," revealed Maldini.
"In the moments of difficulty I had my family and friends around me in Milan to lean on. For a foreign player who is overseas it must be more complicated to get through the tough times. My advice is not to read the newspapers."
Today's dramatic defeat of Udinese would have marked his 23-year anniversary for Milan, but it was not meant to be as the skipper was forced to sit out the match with a nasty case of the flu.
Indeed, Maldini can have few regrets about sticking with his boyhood club, as he has lifted a whopping 25 major trophies in his time with Milan, including seven Scudetti, five Champions League titles, two World Club Cups and one Coppa Italia.
